Leg Fractures
Our legs are used to hold up our bodies and transport us near and far. Knees and legs are under continuous strain from the walking, moving, and bending that we do on a regular daily basis. Leg bones, specifically the femur, are the longest bones in the human body.
Metatarsal bones are located in the legs and are quite susceptible
to breaks. The cartilage in the knees can suffer injuries due to twisting.
The shin bone, called the tibia, is prone to bruising and other more
serious injuries because the lack of fat and muscle covering the bone.
A shin bone fracture is a common injury. When the top of the tibia
is broken where it joins the knee cap it is called a tibia plateau
fracture.
Sports injuries, trauma, and exercise may all cause leg fractures.
Some signs of a fractured leg are swelling, pain, numbness, and discoloration.
Following a leg fracture the injured person should seek medical attention
immediately and follow all of the doctor’s orders. You may be
told to elevate your leg, use crutches, and wear a cast.
